Six Elements of Coasting to Financial Independence
Coast FI is an intentional decision to slow down your path to financial independence, in exchange for more freedom and flexibility now.
Coast FI is a movement within a movement—and I think it’s changing the FIRE game.
It combines elements of slow living and lifestyle design with tactics and strategies from the financial independence camp. For me, it’s the best of both worlds. It allowed me to downshift my career at age 30, pivoting to freelance and seasonal work while spending way more time with the people I love.
And to me—that’s what it’s all about: spending time with the people I love.
But what about you?
When you take a step back and think about your life, what do you want more of? What do you want less of? Why?
Back when I was working 50 to 60 hours a week, I knew things were getting out of balance. Then, when my daughter was born, I decided I would do whatever it takes to be a present and involved dad. That meant leaving my face-paced career and pursuing a more balanced lifestyle.
But for you, it could be as simple as working 5 days a week instead of 6, or 4 days instead of 5. Or maybe it has nothing to do with work. Maybe you just want to prioritize traveling with your family and need to make sure you’ve got the money to make that happen.
Whatever it is, I believe that being intentional about your money can help you do it.
And that’s what my work is all about, creating a conversation around intentional living—using money as a tool to do the things you love.
